Museum Security Assessments on Behalf of Local Council
Monday, 12th February 2024
In February 2024 the Trident Manor team were invited to conduct a security assessment of two venues in a city in Scotland by the local council. One of the venues was a council-run museum within a castle owned by a UK heritage organisation, and the other was a council-run science museum in a council-owned 19th-century building.
Both museums sought to renew their museum accreditation and improve the protection of their assets. The castle museum was limited in its ability to make changes to the building due to the listed status of the castle, a challenge that many cultural venues face.
The Trident Manor team were able to recommend bespoke and cost-effective solutions that were suitable for both the castle museum and the science museum. Due to the robust nature of the buildings and their locations, operational measures and minor physical and technical updates were sufficient improvements for the types of exhibits contained within these sites.
When conducting security assessments, it is important to consider the existing strength of the building, the attractiveness of the assets to hostile actors, and the client’s resource capacity for implementing complex solutions. None of these should be underestimated, however, overestimating these elements can lead to overspec and unsuitable guidance.
