Reviewing Historical Sites
Friday, 9th August 2024
On the 8th of August 2024, a member of the Trident Manor team undertook a security review in Whitby, North Yorkshire of a historical site and multi-use facility on behalf of a national client.
It isn’t too often that Trident Manor can undertake tasks in what can be described as its backyard, but this happened, and a review was undertaken less than an hour from the main offices in Darlington.
Historical sites, especially those that are open to the elements, as well as the public, are at continued risk from environmental and social activities. Balancing protective layers with an appreciation of the space and structure is often a difficult task. This is made even more difficult when listed buildings (those with restrictions on destruction and development) are used to house retail, hospitality, educational, and cultural exhibitions.
In this case, the review was undertaken with only minor observations and recommendations being made, and they were to further enhance the protective layers as opposed to there being any vulnerabilities.
At historic sites, it is frequently seen whereby a consultant has over-specified physical and technical solutions without fully understanding what is acceptable when dealing with historical buildings. At times the client is unable to deliver what the consultant wants because the planning department will not permit such work to go ahead. All costing time, effort and money.
At Trident Manor we not only work with clients and users of historical sites, but we also work with planning departments and authorities to ensure a collaborative approach can be taken to protect and preserve our rich cultural heritage. We understand the parameters and constraints faced by planners and we work with them and clients to ensure that the release of sensitive information is limited through design reviews.
