Security Reviews Conducted at Stores Holding National Collections

The Trident Manor team was recently commissioned to provide security guidance for an archive service in the UK. The client organisation is responsible for a large quantity of documents and national collections and sought to ensure that their protective measures were fit for purpose.

Multiple buildings and stores were reviewed as part of this project, and the physical, technical and operational security measures in place were assessed. Meetings were held with various stakeholders during the visit, and it was felt that there was an appetite by all involved for improving certain aspects of security, but change was difficult due to the long-standing operational practices and systems that were in place.

It is often the case that institutions, especially well-established and historic ones, find difficulty in introducing change when practices have been fixed for several decades. At Trident Manor we work with clients to provide an outside perspective and offer pragmatic and manageable solutions to help improve asset protection. A range of short-term and long-term solutions are usually considered so that organisations can think strategically for the future as well as address more immediate adjustments.

Junior Security Consultant, Hannah Miller, supported in this security review and said: "Working with venues whose primary function is storage and research is totally unique, and the level of engagement with the public is quite different than that of other cultural venues. Nevertheless, the importance of clear governance and operational procedures is just as strong. Without this, gaps and vulnerabilities can appear in physical and technical security features"
